Women’s Cardiovascular Health at Risk

The medical industry needs to do a better job of protecting the hearts of American women. One of the many health challenges women have had to deal with was the scam of Hormone Replacement Therapy. Marketed by pharmaceutical companies as a cure-all for aging, HRT also claimed to protect against heart disease. In 2002 it was revealed that not only was this claim false, but in fact HRT increased risk of heart disease. Women were tricked into using a product that caused the very thing it claimed to prevent.

Another blow to women’s heart health came when researchers at University of California, San Francisco discovered that many heart-related medical devices have not been adequately tested on women. Although women constitute just over 50{4dd06e404e72ec95801fe0b263b473891b4386b36fab10b0923290e2f0288b60} of the population, many devices are tested overwhelmingly on men before getting FDA approval.

After looking through 123 studies for 78 different high-risk medical devices that were approved by the FDA, researchers found significant gender bias. The devices looked at were all for cardiovascular health, including heart valves, implanted defibrillators, pacemakers and stents. Since heart disease is the number one cause of death among women in the US, it is important that these devices perform safely and effectively on women as well as men.

28{4dd06e404e72ec95801fe0b263b473891b4386b36fab10b0923290e2f0288b60} of the studies analyzed made no mention of gender. Men constituted 67{4dd06e404e72ec95801fe0b263b473891b4386b36fab10b0923290e2f0288b60} of the participants in the other studies. Due to differences in bleeding tendencies and size, men and women may have different reactions or side effects with these devices. “We do not know if a lot of medical devices currently on the market are as safe and effective in women as they are in men,” researcher Dr. Rita Redberg said.

The results from their analysis should be surprising given that in 1994, the FDA released a mandate that manufacturers issue a gender-bias statement with each new product application, guaranteeing that the devices were tested in appropriate proportions of men and women. However, under half of the studies reviewed included that required statement. Of those that did, 26{4dd06e404e72ec95801fe0b263b473891b4386b36fab10b0923290e2f0288b60} actually showed sex-linked differences in safety and effectiveness.

Since the 1980s, women’s health groups have been advocating for closer analysis of medication and medical devices and their effects on women. Men have been given preference as test subjects because they lack some of the hormonal variables that make women more “challenging.” This is an unacceptable excuse for sexist practices that endanger women. They deserve the same assurance that approved medical devices and equipment will be safe and effective when used on them, and the FDA needs to crack down and make this happen.

Fashion Tips For Islamic Women To Stay Cool This Summer

It is important to keep the body as cool as possible during the summer months, which can be sometimes an -uphill task- for Muslim women that wear hijabs. The obvious tip is to suggest thinner and cooler fabrics in hotter weather – but it is also important to stick to absorbent materials as well. Getting Into the Fashion Industry

The fashion industry is big business and there will always be a wealth of potential designers and models desperately trying to get their foot in the door. In such a major industry it goes without saying that the competition is fierce and many will get left at the wayside. However, for those truly willing to apply themselves and ride a little luck it’s always going to be possible to make it. Of course for the fashion industry there are a few prerequisites and some things you can do to boost your chances.

Outgoing Personality

Flamboyant may be a better word for this as many of the biggest and most popular designers out there are renoun for this. You need to be confident to get anywhere in the fashion industry. It could of course be said that you need confidence to get ahead in any industry, but for the fashion industry it counts doubly. If you want to get yourself employed or get noticed you have to exude confidence and not be afraid to make yourself heard.

Similarly to being outgoing you have to be fearlessly ambitious. Take advantage of any opportunity to get ahead and don’t be afraid to step on anyone’s toes. It might seem callous but the fashion industry is a brutal one, so don’t take any prisoners. When applying for a position, don’t be timid. Let them know what you’re willing to do to get ahead. If an employer thinks your ambitious then they’ll be more likely to give you the opportunity to prove it. Don’t be humble, but also don’t be arrogant. If you didn’t think you where capable you wouldn’t be trying in the first place.

An Eye for Style

This is obviously the first vital thing that a fashion designer needs in their arsenal. This isn’t something you can just learn but immersing yourself in fashion can really help to hone your understanding if you have that initial creativity. From Wille to Dolce & Gabbana you should know about it. Fashion ranges greatly from the stick thin catwalk to plus size clothes, so be aware of a range of styles. Fashion is always about the next big thing so if you know that you can bring this then let any potential employer knows about it.

A little experience can go a long way, even if it’s just part time working in a designer store. Working in related jobs might not be your intended end but can be a means to an end. This shows direction and will be taken into account in an interview. It will never do you any harm to have a little experience to back up your CV.

Men’s Fashion

The fashion frame of mind of the males, although simplistic, can be harder to fathom than that of the females. Unlike the ladies who would go for what is the trend, what is on sale and what the hottest celebrity is wearing, men would prefer to go for what they like and what they think would suit them best.

Men are not so much dictated by the fashion trend that is hot on the news. They tend to be dictated by their own needs and by their own fashion perspective. This is why releasing a full line of clothing for men is much harder than the female counterpart. It all boils down to what is comfortable, as men would usually say.

But although comfort is the number one consideration for men’s clothing fashion, men are taking a bold step towards expressing themselves fashion-wise. Fashion experts are combining aesthetic and form when it comes to men’s clothing and fashion, adding a little design here and there or a speck of color in some areas. When before men would only go for black and white, they now have a variety of options of colored fabrics to choose from.

Today, men’s clothing fashion is now saying that men should not be boxed in the mindset that they cannot experiment, that they cannot be “fashionable.” Men’s fashion today, have incorporated graphics, color and functionalities in its design, all the more attracting men to be more vocal about their design aesthetic.

Men’s clothing fashion has switched from being generic to being individualistic. Men’s clothes in fashion is deemed to be gearing towards simplicity combined with style. Although in subtle ways, men are now choosing to wear something that will make them standout from the crowd. Being that they would always like to be superior than everyone else, men are bringing this point of view into their clothes as well.

Men’s clothing fashion is now very versatile and attractive. Now men’s fashion brands are offering more options in order to attract and entice their buyers to experiment and create their own style. Before it is just plain shirts and jeans. Now, men can mix and match what they want to wear a collared plaid shirt matched with acid-washed jeans or a graphic statement shirt matched with cargo pants. Men can now add color to their clothing. Men can now be given with a variety of options to choose from when it comes to their clothes in fashion.

How Fashion Movies Influence Society

Fashion is a general term for a currently popular style or practice, especially in clothing, foot wear, accessories and hairstyles. In recent years, it was commonly illustrated through portraits and several other artifacts showing entirely different forms of fashion. Fashion books and magazines are essential tools for everyone in fashion industry and mostly for individuals who always want to keep up with the latest trend.

Most of these books and magazines were written by fashion experts, who have a wide range of knowledge when it comes to appropriate attire and styles and have the capability to influence individuals choice and taste. On the other hand, fashion nowadays was likewise greatly exploited in the movies and music industries. Movie and music enthusiasts usually follow the style of their favorite icons, thus making the celebrities become trendsetters.

For instance, a teenager may choose to cut her hair for a short curly hairstyle or highlight it simply because her favorite star looks the same in a particular movie or her favorite rock star wears the same. These fashion trends have all happened at different times where people can simply copy their favorite celebrities after watching them on TV or going out to the movies. Media influence is an all important factor in todays society.

In India, Bollywood celebrities greatly influenced the latest fashion among young boys and girls because it uses glamorous look and standout fashion trends. From time to time, film makers create new exclusive designs and styles feature in the movies, which are accepted in everydays lifestyle. Fashion movies generally took advantage of the inherent theatrics of fashion. In Hollywood, on the other hand, several fashion movies greatly affect the viewers preference because of its standout and beautiful clothes and styles.

Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffanys established little black dress as a fashion must-have. This style basically fit her long and thin body frame, and practically no curves interfere with the garment silhouette. In The Seven Year Itch, Marilyn Monroe standout at a particular movie scene where she wore white halter dress and got hit with a blast of cold air. The movie became so popular and was imitated by most women even equally famous celebrities.

While most of the clothes are a bit skimpy to have been worn in the 1920s, fashion designers did a great job evoking the jazz age in the movie Chicago, which is starred by Nicole Kidman and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Mohali boy debuts at Lakme Fashion Week

It is well past sun down but the day has just begun for this 27-year-old designer. “I have waited so long for this moment,” admits Vipin Batra as he scurries about getting his tall, leggy models to try out his designs. Batra opened the Generation Next designer category on the first day of the Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2010 in Mumbai last weekend. “I always dreamt of arriving with my own label,” says Batra. His phone hasn’t stopped ringing ever since March 5, when his alma mater Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology (NIIFT) in Mohali got to know about his debut.

Batra, who hails from Rajasthan, is from the 2004-2006 batch of Knitwear Design Technology. “All that I know of fashion, its techniques and philosophy is what I learnt at NIIFT, Mohali,” he says. His teachers haven’t forgotten him either. “Batra was very hard working and I am glad it all paid off well for him,” says NIIFT Mohali’s director Vijay Sharma.

Designer duo Hemant Lalwani and Nandita Rajpurani, incidentally, are two other successful designers who trained at the institute. About a year ago, he came out with his own label V for Vipin Batra. He took his new line to the Bangalore Fashion Week held in February this year. For LFW, Batra rolled out his Swirls of Life. “I like to experiment with different yarns by creating new textures. For Swirls of Life, I was inspired by the planets and the cosmos,” he says, whose line-up included snug-fitting gowns made of graphic-jacquard knitwear technique. With just Swarovskis for embellishment, Batra played up the line with lots of colour.

The response, so far, has been good. “I have got invitations for Hong Kong Fashion Week as well London Fashion Week. I am thrilled,” he sums up. Vipin Batra has been trying to make inroads into Lakme Fashion Week for over three years and finally made his debut this season.

Vipin says, “I was so excited to get this opportunity to show my work to a larger audience with Lakm Fashion Week – Summer/Resort 2010. I am not one to get afraid of competition, rather I take it as a challenge; it gives me even more strength to push my creativity to the next level. Swirls of Light is the main source of inspiration and one person who I would Love to dress in my signature style is my idol, John Gilliano.”
